UPDATE:  So my worst fear happened, the iMac died today for good.  So I am trying to work on our even older laptop until I decide how I am going to replace the iMac.  Hope to have this all resolved by the end of this week!  Wish me luck!

If you follow my twitter feed or my facebook wall then yesterday you saw that chaos and stress was out of control here yesterday.  My iMac’s HD seemed to have failed and with this computer being my workhorse then you can imagine my stress!  The panic started instantly in trying to recollect if I had everything backed up and then remembered that not to many weeks ago I had my husband set up the Time Machine tool on this computer.  Thank goodness!!  It wasn’t my clients files that I was worried about, it was my personal files.  See I am meticulous about backing up every session and every wedding ASAP.  As soon as I get home from a session or wedding those files are downloaded off the cards and instantly burned onto a disk and then transferred to the external HD.  Our personal photo files on the other hand are not.  I kind of get to them here and there when I can and I actually stopped burning them onto disks probably over a year ago.  They only get backed up to the external HD once in awhile and I’ve been neglecting my Shutterfly account terribly lately.  What is my point??

Back up those files!!

I can not stress enough to back up your files and for me when I say files I mean your photos.  You can not get those back!!  My computer was so messed up yesterday that even though I did manage to get it to boot up and make sure that I had my files backed up, once my husband started to try to fix it he ended up having to completely wipe the HD clean and start over.  That’s right!  If I wouldn’t of been able to get in there prior to that those files would be gone now.

So today I wanted to remind you to back up those files at least once a month!  One of the easiest ways to do that is by using Shutterfly.  There are other online places like this but Shutterfly has unlimited storage and that is huge.  I would never leave them for they are holding onto priceless photos of my daughter from the day she was born.  I have folders set up for each year in my account and dump files in there that are very important to me.  I also have the files from our family session on there since I bought the proof files so they are being kept safe as well.  Now I have let this slide really bad since the beginning of the year but I’m putting it on my calendar to do once month.  Their service is wonderful and if you need to download a file on there, no problem.  Need to get a ton of files back that you might of lost just order a DVD with all your images.  Awesome!!  I do not buy many products from them and they do not charge me for my account so it’s free storage!!

So what are you going to do today?  BACK UP YOUR FILES!!  Please!
