Since today is Veteran’s Day I really wanted to share a bit about my Grandfather. I did not get the chance to know my Grandfather, he passed away when I was 6 (mom help me if I’m wrong). Remarkably I can still see him clearly in my mind, sitting at the kitchen table where my mom grew up and stiring our vanilla ice cream until it was so smooth it was just like soft serve. It amazes me that I can still remember that and visualize that when I was so young and that was so long ago. I think what helps is that we have always talked him and my Grandmother always had photos of him around the house, espcially one of him holding me and my brother. She always had that photo by her bed and it is beside mine now.
After meeting my husband and discovering his love for WWII history once I was given a few things of my Grandfather’s I started to search for information about where he might of been during this time. I found a great deal of information online and a full account of what the 89th Infantry did during WWII. I wish that I could give you that entire story but I have pages and pages. I will tell you that they played a huge role in the Crossing the Rhine river and a huge battle happened to accomplish that. Very interesting to read. But what I enjoyed the most while reading through these 70 pages was that my Grandfather’s name was mentioned. His Infantry went through some changing of officers and then their officer had to go to the hospital. During this time my Grandfather, an Intelligence Sergeant, took over the work while the Major was away.
I would never want to imagine what our world would be like if so many men and woman didn’t volunteer to put their lives at risk to make sure that we remain free. I hope that we never abuse that freedom and forget what it means, even with our leaders today. I am thankful for all of our soldiers, past and present.
Here is my very handsome Grandfather.
This is the camera he took with him during WWII, a couple of photos he took, and his dog tag that remains with me always.

Such a handsom guy isn’t he. :)
